Heart Disease, Inflammation, and Stroke... Oh My!

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. When your blood vessels are blocked or narrowed, a sudden interruption of blood supply to your brain can result in a stroke. Those brain cells that are deprived of oxygen will begin to die and that area of the brain will lose the ability to function. Research has found that 87% of all strokes are ischemic strokes, which happens when a blood clot blocks blood flow to the brain.

Cardiovascular disease is caused by inflammation and numerous studies have shown that CBD reduces inflammation in the body. In 2003, three scientists identified a link between heart disease, strokes, and cannabinoids. On October 7 of that year, Julius Axelrod, (Professor Emeritus, NIH pharmacologist and neuroscientist), Maurizo Grimaldi, (Professor NIMH, pharmacologist and neuroscientist) and Aiden Hampson (neuropharmacologist NIMH) were awarded US Patent 6,630,507 B1 identifying the use of cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants.

In their abstract, they stated, “The cannabinoids are found to have particular applications as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative disease, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia."

According to a 2010 review, CBD may help protect patients from brain damage and even aid in recovery by boosting brain function. Also, a 2017 review concluded that CBD increased cerebral blood flow during a stroke. With continued use of cannabinoids we can reduce overall inflammation in our patients. In the case of a ischemic strokes, patients may have better outcomes if they are on CBD compared to those that are not. Although more trials are needed to determine whether these findings also apply to humans, as the majority of the review focused on animal studies, we believe that it is important for medical providers ask their patients if they are using, or if they have considered using, CBD products.
